영국음악 브릿팝 뮤지션 스팅(Sting)

 

내가 가장 좋아하는 뮤지션중 하나인 스팅에 대해 이야기하고 싶다.

처음 접한것은 폴리스의 노래 every breath you take의 기타리프의 선율에 매혹되었고 이후 스팅으로서 클래식하고 째즈스틱한 그만의 노래와 가사에 매혹되었다.그래서 그를 노래하는 음유시인이라고들 한다. 가장 좋아하는 노래는 Shape Of My Heart / Fields Of Gold 이다.

특히 fields of gold를 버스나 기차를 타고 시골풍경을 달릴때 들었는데 그 노래의 선율에 흐르는 경치에 빠지게 되었다.

 

Sting

 

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner CBE (born 2 October 1951 in Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne, England), known by his stage name Sting, is an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, activist, actor and philanthropist. Prior to starting his solo career, he was the principal songwriter, lead singer and bassist for the rock band The Police. Throughout his career, Sting has incorporated distinct elements of jazz, reggae, classical, New Age, and worldbeat into his music. As a solo musician and member of The Police, Sting has received sixteen Grammy Awards; receiving his first Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 1981, three Brit Awards (including Best British Male in 1994), a Golden Globe, an Emmy Award, and several Oscar nominations for Best Original Song. He is a member of both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

 

 

본명 고든 메튜 토마스 섬너 1951년10월2일에 영국 뉴케슬에서 태어났다.  싱어송 라이터이며 자선가이자 운동가로 스팅으로 잘알려진 영국최고의 뮤지션중 하나이다.이전에는 록밴드 폴리스의 베이시스트였으며 나중에 솔로로 데뷔후 재즈,레게,클래식,뉴에이지 등의 장르를 접목한 그만의 독특한 음악을 완성하였고 베스트록뮤직상 골든글로브 베스트 ost상(shape of my heart:LEON),그래미어워드,올해의 영국남자(1994)등 16개의 많은상과 로큰롤 명예의 전당및 작곡자로 이름을 올린 당대 최고의 뮤지션중 하나이다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Born Gordon Matthew Sumner, he is the eldest of four children. Sumner was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, due to the influence of his paternal grandmother, who was from an Irish family. He attended St Cuthbert’s Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne, and then the University of Warwick, but did not graduate. During this time, he often sneaked into nightclubs like the Club-a-Go-Go. Here he saw acts like Jack Bruce and Jimi Hendrix, who would later influence his music. After jobs as a bus conductor, a construction labourer, and a tax officer, he attended Northern Counties Teachers’ Training College, which later became part of Northumbria University, from 1971 to 1974. He then worked as a teacher at St Paul’s First School in Cramlington for two years.

 

아이리쉬 로만 카톨릭 집안에서 네아이의 장남으로 태어났고 문법학교 워릭대학교를 졸업하지않았으며 그시기에 나이트클럽에 종종 잭브루스 및 지미헨드릭스의 영향을 받은 음악들을 접하였다. 버스 관리자,건설노동자,세금징수원 직업을 가졌었고 이후 노섬브리아 대학교에서 사범대학교를 졸업후 세인트 폴 학교에서 선생으로 2년간 일했었다.

 

 

 

 

From an early age, Sumner knew that he wanted to be a musician. His first music gigs were wherever he could get a job, performing evenings, weekends, and during vacations from college and teaching. He played with local jazz bands such as the Phoenix Jazzmen, the Newcastle Big Band, and Last Exit

 

스팅은 그가 뮤지션이 되고싶다는것을 잘알았고 라스트 엑싯 포닉스재즈,뉴캐슬 빅밴드의 일원으로 학교방학기간에 선생을 겸업하면서 연주를 하였다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

He gained his nickname while with the Phoenix Jazzmen. He once performed wearing a black and yellow jersey with hooped stripes that bandleader Gordon Solomon had noted made him look like a bumblebee; thus Sumner became “Sting”.

 

그의 명칭 '스팅'이란 이름은 그가 밴드로 일했던 포닉스 재즈맨의 리더가 스팅이 입은 옷이 노랑색과 검은색 줄무늬의 옷을 보고 땅벌을 연상케하여 그를 '스팅'이라고 불렀다.

In January 1977, Sting moved from Newcastle to London, and soon thereafter he joined Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani (who was very soon replaced by Andy Summers) to form the new wave band The Police. The group had several chart-topping albums and won six Grammy Awards in the early 1980s

 

1977년 1월 마침내 그는 '폴리스' 밴드의 일원으로 참여 1980년대 초 여섯번의 그래미어워즈를 수상한다.

 

 

 

 

그는 예순을 훌쩍 넘긴나이에도 여전히 왕성한 음악활동을 하고있다.
